đŚÂ INVESTIGATIVE PIECE: Shellâs attempt at corporate feminism
International Women's Day (IWD) is a moment to honour women's rights and recognised those still engaged in the struggle for liberation. But for some corporations, it has transformed into an opportunistic pitstop for an image makeover.
Shell's 2020 IWD campaign is a textbook example of "genderwashing," a practice wherein feminist rhetoric is utilised to divert attention from pressing environmental and social issues. Essentially, itâs all about weaponising women's empowerment to gain legitimacy while deflecting from human rights and environmental violations.
The campaign is centered around the slogan "Shell" morphing into "She Will," a calculated attempt to forge a connection between women's empowerment and the Shell brand. Through this semiotic strategy, Shell associates itself with progressive values and gender equality. This isn't the first time a fossil fuel giant has revamped its brand name to appear more socially relevant. Who can forget BP's infamous "Beyond Petroleum" slogan, a thinly veiled attempt to distance themselves from their core business of oil extraction?
Yet, Shellâs campaign falls flat on several fronts. Firstly, it reeks of inauthenticity. Its promotional video features women of all ages and races staring into the camera, while vague slogans like âshe will be heard,â âshe will be respectedâ and âshe will be valuedâ flash across the screen. Deep stuff. The video wraps up with the hashtag â#MakeTheFuture gender biasedâ, which seems to have been thrown in as an afterthought.
Secondly, the campaign is patronising in its portrayal of women. The passive construction of the sentences diminishes the agency of women. Here, the women arenât the doers - they're the ones being acted upon. These slogans imply that women must rely on others to grant them value, respect, or a voice, placing emphasis on what is done to women rather than what they actively achieve or contribute.
Shell isn't alone in this PR facelift. International Womenâs Day has become a prime target for the fossil fuel industry to maintain its social license, often hijacking feminist narratives to deflect from environmental damage. These companies frequently highlight the number of women in leadership roles or boast about career opportunities for women in their industry. However, this surface-level rebranding serves to mask the fundamental problem: their core business operations worsen climate change, disproportionately impacting, you guessed it, women.
